Fly Lessons

I was recently informed that I don't spend enough time talking about the first of the the three triathlon disciplines... swimming.

I was so kindly reminded that it is one of three equal parts (although time wise during the race, it is NOT equal... swimming should be much, much longer). Anywho, y'all can expect more swimming photos (maybe) and more discussion about the water. Just don't expect any photos of yours truly in a bathing suit because that is just not happening! So let's start by showing off where I swim.

At this particular pool for the last two evenings, after the sets for the Master's workouts have been completed, I have had my own personal butterfly lessons. My favorite pool friend decided that I really needed to be faster at fly. What did I learn from the last two Master's practices? I have issues with rhythm and as my pool friend says... trouble undulating. That almost sounds embarrassing! =0) And you may be asking, "why, why fly when you swim free in races?" "What about training specificity?" "What could you possibly be thinking, doing 50 after 50 of butterfly?"

And my answer is...

because it is fun.

Even after many years on a swim team, I still suck at fly... I can get about halfway across the pool and then my arms are nowhere near clearing the water! Fun! Crazy girl!

you should fly because many can't...just like tri. kick twice, once when the arms enter and again right before they leave the h20. This will help you get those babies out of the water so that you can clear the pool...or just muscle the whole thing.

What a tease you are...I was thinking, "yay, more swimming photos" for the HAC thread" :P

Oh well...the pool is nice!!! Wish I had a ncie pool like that to swim in!

I agree with anon - fly is an advanced stroke that most can't do, and when you can rock the fly it looks sweet. There's nothing like doing 100-200YD fly in the swim warmup area at a race to make you feel like a stud - that, and it actually serves as a good warmup ;)

I agree KT - fly is fun! Once you get the rhythm down its not nearly as difficult. And its a great workout. Unfortunately I've been dealing with some back issues and can't swim fly at the moment :(

Enjoy!

'why fly when you can free"....why free when you can side...why side when you can lie on your back and scuttle? I tried to fly once at the pool...I was glad no one was watching...
